Garden Starter Baskets
« on: December 11, 2008, 12:05:18 PM »

:tree01: Necessity, being the mother of invention, has resulted in a home-made Christmas around here this year.

Our son & his wife commented that they want to start gardening next year, cuz produce is so spendy anymore, & my daughter & her hubby are planning to make raised beds so they can grow some of their own food.  Our other daughter-in-law already has established veggie gardens, but the price of seeds these days almost need to be budgeted for!  So, I decided to make garden starter gift baskets for them, for Christmas.

I made seed packets, got little baskets at the thrift store & Dollar store, found gloves & hand tools on sale for cheap, & I already had unused peat pots in the garden shed, so each basket cost me less than $5. The seed packets collection is made up of 12 different types of veggie seeds, all that were harvested from my garden or Peggy's garden.  (Thanx, Peg!)

I'm pleased with how the gift baskets are turning out (I'll be wrapping them with Christmas cellophane wrap & a pretty bow, just like "real" gift baskets) & I hope the kids will like them.

(I thought about putting this post in the Hobby section, but putting those seed packets together & looking up the planting & care instructions for each one is a lot of work... something I wouldn't call a "hobby"!)
If you stare at this picture long enough you should be able to see a giraffe.

I'm happy to report that the kids thought their garden gifts were really great!

I didn't include flower or herb seeds in their baskets... (got tired of making packets!)   When it comes time to plant, they can come over & pick through my seed stash & figure out which flowers they want. I'll encourage the use of Marigolds & Basil as companion plants for their veggie gardens & I have a hoard of Peggy's Egyptian Walking Onions that they can take, as well.
